Richmond is proud to have been selected to host the 2009 BC Seniors Games to be held September 16-19, 2009. The Richmond 2009 Games attracted amost 4,000 participants and will be the largest sports event ever held in Richmond. As a community-led initiative, the games are a collaboration of the city's seniors, sports associations, and multicultural communities.
Richmond's bid was developed by Richmond Sports Council, the collective body of the city's sports groups. Directed by a community volunteer board, the games was supported by over 1,300 event volunteers, as 40 community groups worked together to showcase our city. The purpose of the BC Seniors Games is to promote activity and wellness amongst BC's seniors. As Canada's healthiest city, with an average life span of 83 years, Richmond epitomizes the games' objectives of seniors' health and wellness. These games will leave tangible improvements to sports and activity facilities for our seniors.
There was 29 sports in the games, e.g., softball, soccer, track and field, curling, golf, table tennis, badminton, horseshoes, cribbage, darts, and square dancing. Richmond's selections as demonstration sports are pickleball, dragon boat racing, and long-track speed skating. All participants will be 55 years of age or older, qualifying for teams representing 13 BC regions.
Richmond has excellent facilities in all disciplines. The new Richmond Olympic Oval will be the stunning centre-piece of events, including registration and the dinner.
